These horses are probably the descendants of domesticated animals stranded on the island during a shipwreck in the 16th or 17th century. Visitors are strongly encouraged to keep a distance of 50 feet from the ponies. Since then, several nudist communities have set up on the Maryland. In 1984, a spiritual group from Virginia lobbied the Virginia section of the shoreline to pass an anti-nudity ordinance. People are allowed to walk the beaches in both the Maryland and Virginia portions of the island. At one point in time the playa, known as Assateague Island, also a National State Park famed for the wild horses, had been a very popular unclothed beach. They can often be seen in small groups of just a few ponies along the beach. The island is most famous for its feral ponies which live on the island and in the surrounding waters. Yes, you may walk to see the Chincoteague ponies on the Assateague Island. Their water comes from the freshwater ponds. The ponies’ diet consists mainly of marsh and dune grasses. The separate herd in Virginia is owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department, which sponsors the annual pony penning and swim every July. Assateague Island National Seashore encompasses the entire island south of Maryland’s Assateague State Park and is co-managed by the United States Park Service and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The National Park Service manages the herd of ponies at the northern end of Assateague Island. The island is about 8 miles south of Ocean City, Maryland.
